Description:
Fiesta de Merengue embodies the energy and spirit of the wonderful Caribbean dance that its name includes. Held in Santo Domingo, the festival features stages set out along the waterfront where you can find a variety of first-class bands playing merengue.
For two weeks in mid-summer, bands and DJs turn El Malecón (the boardwalk) into a 24/7 dance party. Merengue is deeply rooted in the Dominican Republic. The lively 2/4-beat music originated on Hispaniola in the early 19th century reflecting Spanish, West Africa, and Creole influences.
