21 Jump Street Claims #1 Spot: Weekend Box Office Report

21 Jump Street opened to a strong first weekend. Friday night, the movie opened at $13M and topped the weekend off at $35M. Considering that most TV remakes are a hit or miss, this is an overall nice take for the first successful comedy of 2012.

Universal Pictures’ animated Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax fell to second place with $22.8 million, with a total gross of $158 million after three weekends.

John Carter’s overseas reception remains considerably kinder than the comparable $13.5 weekend tally and $53.2 million cumulative-to-date meted out in the U.S. and Canada.

Eddie Murphy’s long-delayed comedy A Thousand Words takes the top 5 spot.  This movie seems to have held its own for its second weekend out. Though the film is still considered to be a huge flop, it is only down 39% from its opening weekend.
