Home sweet home! Angelina Jolie and the kids are back in Los Angeles after spending three months abroad filming for First They Killed My Father. Zahara and Shiloh were spotted with mom at LAX airport on Wednesday.
First They Killed My Father is the true story of Loung Ung who recounts her experiences while growing up under the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. Ung gives an inside look into life during unrest and the bravery that her family exhibited during times of war and despair.
Angelina Jolie knows all about bravery and grief as she recently created a film about her bereavement after her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, died of cancer in 2007. “When she found out she had cancer the first time, she was gonna have her ovaries removed, [and] she was very upset,” Jolie told media during a recent interview. “There was a woman down the hall who was wailing. I later found out it was a young woman who had not had children yet, and that put everything into perspective.”
Perhaps the woman down the hall served as Jolie’s motivation to undergo a mastectomy when she discovered that her chances of developing breast cancer were high. “My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer,” she said after undergoing the procedure in 2013. “The decision to have a mastectomy was not easy,” she added. “But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”
