Bob Dylan Biography
Bob Dylan, whose real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman, was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. He grew up in a close-knit Jewish community there with his parents until he was six years old. Then, they moved to Hibbing, Minnesota, which was his mother’s hometown. His father and uncles had a store selling furniture and appliances in Hibbing. While going to Hibbing High School, Dylan formed several bands. In 1959, he went to the University of Minnesota and joined the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. During college, he started performing regularly at a coffeehouse called the Ten O’Clock Scholar near the campus, and he also became part of the Dinkytown folk music scene. After leaving college at the end of his first year, Dylan went to New York City in 1961 to perform. Through these performances and connections, he got a chance to play the harmonica on Carolyn Hester’s album. The producer of that album, John Hammond, was so impressed with Dylan’s talent that he signed him to Columbia Records.
