MTN Ghana has rolled out a service to block unsolicited SMS from any shortcode, phone number or alphanumeric sender_id called DO NOT DISTURB. It is very easy to use this service and more importantly, it is FREE of charge. This service is not only for blocking loan related spammers but for any other contact you wish to block from reaching you via SMS.

You now have control over who reaches you via SMS as an MTN customer. A similar service will be rolled out for Vodafone, AirtelTigo, Glo and the other networks soon.

How To Block A Number From Sending You SMS

If the loan messages you receive comes from a particular number the use the following procedures

  • Create a text message beginning with the keyword  BLOCK,  leave a space, then type the phone number or sender name you want to block. For example type Block 1933 where 1933 is the phone number that sends you the annoying messages.
  • Send the message to the shortcode 1309. For instance if you always receive spam from 1933, you have to send Block 1933 to 1309.
  • If it is successful you will receive the following message “You have successfully blacklisted 1903. You can no longer send or receive sms from 1903. You have not been charged for this service“.
  • Note that this will block messages from only the specified number.
  • Repeat the process to block as many numbers and loan companies as you want

    If the loan messages you receive comes from a particular company such as Izwe, Dalex, FastLoans etc, use the following procedures. Use the name that appears when you receive the message.

  • Example To block Dalex send: Block Dalex…. to 1309
  • Create a text message beginning with the keyword  BLOCK,  leave a space, then type the sender name you want to block. For example type Block Dalex…. where Dalex…. is the phone number that sends you the annoying messages.
  • Send the message to the shortcode 1309. 
  • If it is successful you will receive the following message “You have successfully blacklisted Dalex…. . You can no longer send or receive sms from 1903. You have not been charged for this service“.
  • Note that this will block messages from only the Dalex…..
  • Repeat the process to block as many numbers and loan companies as you want

    How To Block All Loan Text Messages On Phone

  • This can be done by Sending Block E-loans to the short code 1309
  • You will receive message from the short code 1309 which reads: “You have successfully blacklisted E-loans .You can no longer send or receive sms from E-loans . You have not been charged for this service
  • How To Check If All Block Was Successful

    This can be done by VIEWING BLOCKED LIST with the procedures below

    • You can view the list of blocked contacts by sending Check to 1309
    • The list of all numbers you have blocked / blacklist will show up

    How To Fix Issues If You are Unable To Block Text Messages

    • Make sure you are using the exact name of the Company as displayed on the title of the text message you receive
    • Or Make sure you are using the exact number of the Company, this can be found in the “Advanced” options section of the text message depending on your phone

  • On the top right of the message you want to block, tap on the three dots on the top right corner
  • Then Go to Spam and Block
  • Then tap on the three dots on the top right again
  • Then tap on blocked contacts
  • Then select ADD A NUMBER
  • You will then be asked to type the number you want to block, type the number to block
  • Use Truecaller Mobile App

    There are apps that can help you do same on your smartphone except that the messages reach your phone before the app deals with them. Note that true caller requires internet connection at times

  • Truecaller is used for identifying unknown numbers and blocking such numbers.
  • Open true caller and go to the spam messages tab, you will then see all messages from all telecom operators
  • To block a message, all you will have to do is to press and hold that message and then hit on Block button.
