Jeffrey Marshall Foxworthy was born on September 6, 1958, in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents, Carol and Jimmy Foxworthy, raised him in a middle-class family. His father worked as an executive at IBM. Foxworthy completed his high school education at Hapeville High School and then decided to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. However, he left the university without graduating. After leaving college, Foxworthy joined IBM, just like his father, and worked in the field of mainframe computer maintenance. During his time at IBM, he would often entertain his colleagues with jokes and funny stories. Encouraged by his coworkers, Foxworthy decided to participate in the Great Southeastern Laugh-off contest at the Punchline comedy club in Atlanta. In 1984, he entered the competition and emerged as the winner, which sparked his desire to pursue a career in comedy.
