About Jeon Sun-Hee Jeon Somi
Jeon gained fame in South Korea by winning the top spot on the survival reality show Produce 101 and becoming a member of the show’s eleven-member project girl group, I.O.I.
After I.O.I’s group activities ended, Jeon signed a contract with YG Entertainment’s subsidiary, The Black Label. She made her solo debut on June 13, 2019, with the song “Birthday,” and her first full album, XOXO, was released in 2021.
Jeon’s family moved to Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, when she was just six months old due to her mother’s homesickness. Her father had previously lived in the area while studying Taekwondo before returning to Canada.
At the age of four, she appeared on television with her father when he was interviewed by KBS News for his snow-clearing efforts in the neighborhood.
She initially attended a foreigner’s school before transferring to Seoul Midong Elementary School to study Taekwondo. She faced challenges in school due to discrimination related to her mixed ethnicity, which led her to contemplate altering her appearance to fit in.
She graduated from elementary school in 2013 and later graduated from Cheongdam Middle School on February 3, 2017.
Jeon completed her secondary education at Hanlim Multi Art School, majoring in Practical Music and Vocal, and graduated on February 7, 2020.
Her desire to become a singer began when she saw Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” music video as a child. She was introduced to Korean pop at the age of nine and became a fan of Park Bom from 2NE1 due to her unique voice.
In her fourth year of elementary school, Jeon began auditioning for various South Korean entertainment companies.
She appeared in the Children’s Day Special for Let’s Go! Dream Team Season 2 in 2013 as a member of Seoul Midong Elementary School’s Taekwondo demonstration team, alongside Park Joon-hyung.
In the same year, she also sang and featured in a music video for English education. Jeon left JYP Entertainment on August 20, 2018, after a formal discussion and mutual agreement.
The following month, she signed an exclusive contract with YG Entertainment’s independent subsidiary label, The Black Label, where she met CEO Teddy Park, who impressed her with his authenticity and future plans.
Jeon believed that The Black Label would allow her to focus on personal and artistic growth, which aligned with her interests, as opposed to the constant promotional and release pressures in the industry.
She was invited to attend the 102nd anniversary of the Korean Declaration of Independence on March 1, 2021, at Tapgol Park in Seoul’s Jongno District. South Korean President Moon Jae-in was present, and Jeon recited a reading from the March 1st Declaration of Independence in Korean alongside foreign activist descendants. She was chosen by The Blue House as a multicultural representative due to her global popularity as an idol promoting Korean content.
On May 4, Jeon and most of the I.O.I members celebrated their fifth debut anniversary with a livestream special called “Yes, I Love It!” Only members Kyulkyung and Mina were absent.
Jeon is a Taekwondo instructor with over ten years of training, initially taught by her father, who holds a fourth-degree black belt. She reached the fourth-degree black belt level after participating in Kukkiwon’s examination. She applied for dan conversion in South Korea, officially becoming a fourth-degree black belt holder, qualified to run and manage a dojang.
She possesses three passports, each from South Korea, Canada, and the Netherlands.
