Joseph Anthony Budden was born on August 31, 1980, in a place called East Harlem in New York City. His parents are Joseph Budden and Fay Southerland. When he was thirteen years old, he moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, with his mom and older brother. He went to Lincoln High School there. Joseph’s dad wasn’t around when he was growing up, and this affected him, which he later talked about in his music. Joseph had a difficult time during his youth. He was sent to a boarding school in North Carolina called Laurinburg Institute, where he started getting better at rapping. When he came back to Jersey, he started using drugs and got addicted to something called angel dust. One day, after a serious talk with his mom, Joseph decided to go to rehab on July 3, 1997. He did this so he could go to his senior prom. Unfortunately, he didn’t finish school and even became a father at the age of 20.
