Joy Reid and Joe Walsh are two hosts who never back down from speaking their minds and that includes about Michael Che’s viral Saturday Night Live moment. The comic declared President Donald Trump is a “cheap cracker” for his tepid response to Puerto Rico’s hurricane recovery efforts. And Reid and Che had very different reactions.
“This isn’t that complicated, man,” Che says during SNL’s “Weekend Update,” Saturday, Sept. 30. “It’s hurricane relief, these people need help. You just did this for white people twice. Do the same thing. Go tell Melania to put on her flood heels, get some bottled water, some food, pack up some extra Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl T-shirts, and write them a check with our money, you cheap cracker!”
“It’s like when anybody darker than your golf pants has a problem you’re thinking, ‘How can I make this worse?'” Che adds with a zinger.
The name-calling didn’t sit well with Walsh and he questioned what would happen if former President Barack Obama was called a derogatory name.

Enter Reid. The MSNBC national correspondent quickly tore into the conservative radio host. And she used every euphemism for “racist” she could muster. The remark prompted Walsh to respond and the two continued to exchange barbs.

Reid also issued a burn by referencing the news unearthed in 2011 that the former congressman owed $117,437 in child support.

Walsh’s tweet is questionable for a number of reasons. One is his blatant use of the n-word but the other his blindness to the racism Obama faced during his time in office. There have been several local officials who lost their jobs for posting racist social media messages about 44 and his family (although at least one tentatively got it back). Even daughters Sasha and Malia Obama were unfairly targeted for celebrating life milestones.
Recently, former first lady Michelle Obama spoke candidly about the racism she endured since 2008.
“The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut,” she admitted at The Women’s Foundation of Colorado in July. “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin color.”
