About Luke Benedict Osborne

George Gideon Oliver Osborne CH, born Gideon Oliver Osborne on 23 May 1971, is a former British politician and newspaper editor. He held the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016 and served as First Secretary of State from 2015 to 2016 in the Cameron government. A member of the Conservative Party, Osborne represented Tatton as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2001 to 2017. He also took on the role of editor at the Evening Standard from 2017 to 2020.

Born to Peter Osborne, co-founder of Osborne & Little, and a baronet, George Osborne was born in Paddington. He received his education at Norland Place School, Colet Court, and St Paul’s School before pursuing studies at Magdalen College, Oxford. After a brief period as a freelancer for The Daily Telegraph, he joined the Conservative Research Department in 1994, eventually becoming the head of its political section. Osborne served as a special adviser to Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Douglas Hogg and worked for Prime Minister John Major at 10 Downing Street, including involvement in Major’s 1997 general election campaign. In the opposition, he worked as a speechwriter and political secretary to William Hague, Major’s successor as the party leader.

Osborne entered Parliament in 2001, becoming the youngest Conservative member of the House of Commons. Appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Conservative leader Michael Howard in 2004, he later played a key role in David Cameron’s successful party leadership campaign in 2005. Following this, Osborne was named Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. After the 2010 general election, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Cameron–Clegg coalition, inheriting a significant deficit resulting from the late-2000s financial crisis. During his tenure, Osborne implemented austerity measures to address the budget deficit and initiated the Northern Powerhouse initiative. After the Conservatives secured an overall majority in the 2015 general election, Cameron reappointed him as Chancellor and added the title of First Secretary of State. Osborne was considered a potential successor to David Cameron as the Leader of the Conservative Party.

However, after the 2016 referendum vote in favor of leaving the European Union and Cameron’s subsequent resignation, Osborne was dismissed by Cameron’s successor, Theresa May. He spent a year on the backbenches before exiting public office at the 2017 general election. In addition to his political career, Osborne served as the editor of the Evening Standard from 2017 to 2020.
