During her teenage years, Martha worked as a model and appeared in TV commercials for Unilever and Tareyton. She continued modeling while in college, taking up opportunities with clients like Chanel. It was during her college years that she met Andrew Stewart, a student at Yale Law School. They got married in July 1961, and Martha graduated from Columbia in 1962 with a double major in History and Architectural History.
