- Today, on Saturday, November 4th, delegates from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have cast their votes to choose the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections. The four individuals in contention for this position are Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (Member of Parliament for Assin Central), former Food and Agric Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament Francis Addai-Nimoh.
- This election involves a substantial number of over 200,000 party delegates participating at 331 polling stations and 274 voting centers. The delegates, who form the Electoral College, consist of Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, government ministers and their deputies, founding members of the NPP, members of the party’s National Council, as well as patrons and council of elders. Additionally, regional party officials, constituency officers, constituency patrons, constituency elders, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, overseas branches, and members of Tescon, the party’s tertiary students’ wing, are included.
- While Dr. Bawumia is seen as the leading candidate, Kennedy Agyapong is expected to be a strong competitor, following his surprising second-place finish in the party’s super delegates conference, which took place before former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen.
