Paul-Henri Nargeolet, widely known as “Mr. Titanic,” was a French deep-sea explorer and renowned expert on the Titanic. He tragically lost his life on June 18, 2023, when the submersible Titan imploded near the Titanic wreck. Nargeolet was born on March 2, 1946, in Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France, and spent 13 years living in Casablanca, Morocco, before moving to Paris at the age of 16 to pursue his studies.
He began his professional journey in the French Navy, serving as an officer specializing in mine clearance, diving, and deep-sea interventions from 1964 to 1986. During the 1970s, he held the position of Commander of the Groupement de Plongeurs Démineurs de Cherbourg, tasked with locating and disarming underground mines. In the 1980s, he transferred to the Undersea Intervention Group (French: Groupe d’Intervention sous la Mer: GISMER), where he operated intervention submarines. This period saw him traveling the world to retrieve sunken French aircraft, as well as a Roman wreck found at a depth of 70 meters and a DHC-5 Buffalo that crashed in 1979 with 12 individuals on board, including members of the Mauritanian government.
