The weekend isn’t over yet, but some numbers are in for this weekends box office and Texas Chainsaw 3D was pretty impressive by taking the top spot, beating out Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, which wasn’t too far behind.
Texas Chainsaw 3D earned $23 million over the weekend, that’s well above the $18.5 million the prequel made in 2006. The increase is the result of higher ticket prices and the addition of the very popular R&B singer Trey Songs, who plays Ryan. The film received a weak C+ from CiemaScore, but that’s not really a factor for horror movie fans. Texas Chainsaw 3D is expected to reach $50 million over its run in theaters, which is definitely doable with after this strong outing.
Django Unchained remains in the second spot for the second week in a row with an estimated $20 million. This brings the film to a grand total of $106.4 million to date. This puts the slave spaghetti western on pace to out gross Inglorious Bastards, which is Tarantino’s last film. Audiences responded well to the film and it already racked up a few Academy Award Nominations.
In third plac is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which made $17.5 million. That means the movie is down 45% since its opening weekend, but it grossed $263.8 million domestic and $825 million worldwide. At this point, The Hobbit is the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2012.
