During the 2017 recruiting cycle, Tagovailoa was regarded as a four-star recruit and the top high school prospect in Hawaii. He attended Saint Louis School in Honolulu, the same school where former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner, had studied. Mariota served as a mentor to Tagovailoa during their time in Hawaii. Tagovailoa received 17 scholarship offers from college football programs before ultimately choosing to enroll at the University of Alabama in January 2017.
