Tan Chuan-Jin, a Singaporean politician and former brigadier-general, has held the positions of Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore since 2017 and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council since 2014. Born on January 10, 1969, Tan Chuan-Jin is a member of the People’s Action Party (PAP) and has represented the Kembangan–Chai Chee division of Marine Parade GRC as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2011.
Before entering politics, Tan had a distinguished military career in the Singapore Armed Forces from 1987 to 2011, achieving the rank of Brigadier-General. His military roles included Commanding Officer of the 3rd Guards Battalion, Army Attaché at the Singapore embassy in Jakarta, Commander of the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade, Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Plans), Commander of the 3rd Division, and Commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command. He led the Singapore Armed Forces Humanitarian Assistance Task Force in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and chaired the executive committee of the Singapore National Day Parade in 2009.
In 2011, Tan transitioned to politics, contesting and winning in the general election as part of a PAP team in Marine Parade GRC. He served as the Senior Minister of State for National Development from 2012 to 2013, Minister for Manpower from 2012 to 2015, and Minister for Social and Family Development in 2015. In 2017, he assumed the role of Speaker of the Parliament, succeeding Halimah Yacob.
Tan has been re-elected in subsequent general elections, maintaining his parliamentary seat in Kembangan–Chai Chee. Alongside his political career, he is married with two children and has been the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council since 2014, underscoring his commitment to sports and enhancing Singapore’s global presence. Tan’s career is characterized by a strong sense of duty and leadership, earning him respect in Singaporean governance.
